Tight constraints on the nature of the optically faint X-ray source population from the GOODS Southern Field
Abstract
The majority of the optically faint X-ray sources (i.e., I>24) detected in deep X-ray surveys appear to be obscured AGNs. However, their optical faintness has limited the constraints that can be placed on their redshifts, intrinsic X-ray luminosities, and relationships with other optically faint source populations (e.g., EROs and high-redshift galaxies). Here we combine the deep and extensive HST ACS and ground-based observations, obtained as part of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS), with the deep X-ray observations from the 1 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South survey to place the tightest constraints to date on the nature of the optically faint X-ray source population. Ground-based imaging data were taken at ESO 2.2m, NTT, VLT, and NOAO 4m telescopes and made publicly available.
